Hearing science

Deaf since birth.

Got a hearing implant at 29.

Watch it get turned on for the first time.

I’m not gonna lie -- I got a little choked up here!

There’s a lot of these “hearing implant turned on for the first time” videos on YouTube and they all do the same thing to me. Science!

TNG in HD

I sure am glad Star Trek The Next Generation was shot on film.

The entire series -- all 178 episodes -- is being remastered in widescreen 1080p and they’re even recreating every visual effect to make those look good in HD too. The audio’s even getting remixed and bumped from Dolby Pro Logic to DTS Master 7.1!

One of the first episodes to get the special treatment is my favorite TNG episode of all time -- The Inner Light.

The first three episodes hit BluRay in January.

The music is a horrible remix of a horrible song, but the dancing here is unbelievable.

The future of massages

I like getting shoulder and neck massages.

If science ever invents a machine that can massage your shoulder, neck, and upper-back areas, it would be an incredible thing and mankind would only benefit.

I don’t know if I would have the courage to sit in it, though. The amount of pressure that it would need to apply is pretty high, and I don’t know that I’d trust a machine made of steel and hydraulics to know how much is too much.

Paralyzing myself in the interest of back-massaging science is not on my bucket list.

These are the kinds of things I ponder when I lie in bed awake at 3 in the morning.

Radiolab wins

A few months ago Radiolab quickly and handily defeated This American Life in the endless competition for the coveted title of “Brett’s Favorite Radio Show/Podcast”

TAL’s Ira Glass just wrote a piece that praises Radiolab up, down, and sideways.

Both shows are fantastic. You should listen!

APCO 25 Encryption Cracked

I wondered if this was ever going to happen: Security Researchers Crack APCO P25 Encryption

This comes less than a year after researchers at UPenn discovered weaknesses in APCO P25 that left it vulnerable to Denial of Service attacks.

All we need now is a P25-enabled SDR with a developer behind it brave enough to break the law. Won’t happen.

5.1 for cheap

They’re mostly famous for their cheap A/V cables, but Monoprice has pretty remarkable deals on a whole bunch of stuff. Wallplates, projector screens, wireless HDMI extenders, antennas…you name it.

Today they started taking orders for this Monoprice-branded 5.1 speaker system at just $85.

Monoprice 5.1

You’d still need to buy a good receiver to power them, but at least now your speakers don’t have to cost more than your receiver!
