DD-WRT failed flash

My router died last night when I tried to upgrade DD-WRT to a newer version. I lost my DHCP server, the LEDs stopped blinking, it was unpingable…the works!

Here’s how to fix a failed DD-WRT upgrade relatively quickly. I was using a Netgear WNDR3700v2, but I suspect the recovery process is similar if not identical for other Atheros WiSoC-based routers. The DD-WRT wiki also has additional troubleshooting info if this process doesn’t work for you.

  • Assign your PC a static IP of 192.168.1.100
  • Grab tftp2.exe from anywhere.
  • Set it to upload the latest DD-WRT to your router’s last known IP (likely 192.168.1.1), set the retry number to 100, and start it.
  • Turn off the router.
  • Hold down the reset button as you power up the router.
  • Keep the reset button held until you see the power LED flash continuously. Takes about 30 seconds, maybe less.
  • Casually walk back to your computer and watch the progress bar as the new firmware image is loaded.
  • When flashing completes wait about two minutes, power-cycle the router, and you’re back in business. You’ve lost all your settings, but you’re back in business.

If I’d had this list of instructions handy last night it probably would have prevented me from going to bed before 1.

Carl’s Jr.’s TV ads (Hardees for you east-coasters) have always been about showing how big and sloppy their burgers are.

For years they’ve been a real turn-off for anyone who likes keeping their hands clean. (me)

Something changed recently and in just one commercial their ads have gone from awful to awesome.

I don’t post here about work very much. I suspect a few customers may be reading this, though.

There’s big news in the world of DreamHost this month. We’re bringing on our first CEO. We’ve never had one before.

The press release went out today. Check it out if you haven’t already. I wrote it.

Things will be changing…but the how and the what and the why have yet to be determined. I think customers should be excited for the change!

whited00r to the rescue

The people on the Whited00r project are saints. They’re taking Apple firmware updates and optimizing them to run on older hardware that Apple has long since abandoned.

I haven’t tried it yet, but anything that promises to give me back at least some of the speed that I saw in “the old days” on my iPhone 3G is worth trying out! I pretty much hate my phone right now.

Blue Spruce

Please enjoy Blue Spruce by Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer.

This is my favorite Béla Fleck song. And he’s not even playing the banjo!
