From 2006 to 2009, Spain’s El Bulli restaurant was named “The Best Restaurant In The World” by Restaurant magazine, though they slipped to second place in 2010.
El Bulli sits high in the mountains of Catalonia, Spain at the end of a winding one-lane road.
The Amateur Gourmet documented the 30 course meal (!) they had at El Bulli back in 2009 and it still makes my mouth water.

Unfortunately El Bulli is getting out of the restaurant game. They’re closing on July 30th and aren’t accepting any more reservations.
They’re going to reopen in 2014 as a “creativity center” for molecular gastronomy. Which, I think, is a fancy way of saying “We made a ton of money. We’re going to sit around and eat plain old steak and lobster – with no funny business – until we die. Adéu.”

Someone at Salon just discovered Star Wars: The Musical, an original high school musical production that I worked on. I was on the stage crew doing…well, I can’t remember. 1996 was a long time ago. I do remember pushing the massive wall of the garbage compactor onstage with a handful of other nerds, though.
At the time the musical was quite a local phenomenon and actually getting IN to the theater was a real problem if you didn’t get there hours in advance. With only three nights of shows scheduled, demand was high and seating was limited. Literally thousands of people showed up over the course of a weekend and the theater could only accommodate ~300 per show.
I still can’t believe the school administration just sat there and allowed us to pull off such a huge copyright infringement on campus.
Somewhere I still have a cassette of the full cast recording…Someday I’ll dig up the official website I built for it, though by 2011 standards it’s pretty primitive. Check the YouTube clips embedded in the Salon article for a taste of what you missed.

If Japan melts down, America will be okay.
Japan won’t be okay. In fact it’ll be pretty horrible over there for a long time. But radiation levels over here are not anything to be concerned about.
…health and nuclear safety experts agree that even if radiation levels around the plant reach Chernobyl-like levels, Japan’s disaster will not pose a health hazard to the United States.
The distance between Los Angeles and Chernobyl is about 6,246 miles; Los Angeles to Fukushiima Daiichi is only a bit closer, at 5,368 miles. New York to Chernobyl, located in modern-day Ukraine, is even closer at 4,629 miles. But there has been no evidence of health effects felt in the United States from that nuclear accident, which was worse in its radiation effects than Fukushima Daiichi (so far).
CNN is the voice of reason today.

You Are Listening To Los Angeles takes live LAPD police radio calls and overlays them with ambient music. You wouldn’t think so, but the end result is greater than the sum of its parts.
The live feed is provided by a contributor to Radio Reference, which also hosts hundreds of other live feeds from across the country. The LAPD feed combines channels from several different areas, so while it’s not very listenable it certainly gets the job done.
